Norway Historical Society Facts

Founded:
The Norway Historical Society was founded in 1974 and incorporated in 1977. It moved into its current location in the Mark P. Smith House in 1978.

Mission:
Our mission is to bring people together to share, celebrate and learn about Norway's heritage through collecting, caring for and exhibiting Norway's historical treasures. We facilitate the collection of and research into family and local history and provide a variety of programs to engage people of all ages.

Collections:
The Society maintains extensive local newspaper records dating from 1850, vital statistic records, and genealogies of many local families, all of which are available to researchers. The museum houses a large collection of items and documents from all eras of Norway's history.

Facilities:
The Norway Historical Society occupies the Mark P. Smith House. Now at 471 Main Street, the house was originally built on the corner of Main and Danforth Streets circa 1828. It was moved around the corner in the 1950's so that it faced out towards Danforth Street. In 1977 Norway Savings Bank purchased the land on which the Smith House was situated. They offered it to the Historical Society, at which point it was moved to its current location.
